BC was a young college football player who got arrested in Destin while here on vacation. He was charged with Burglary and Theft after allegedly breaking into several cars. He was facing a felony conviction and up to 10 years in prison. He was also looking at the loss of his scholarship. He was especially worried that his dream to join the Air Force after graduation was no longer an option because of this one mistake.
I prepared an extensive file of mitigating evidence about my client including letters of recommendation, character references, community service records, and report cards. I also interviewed all of the witnesses and carefully reviewed the police reports and video evidence. Once I had prepared my case and had come up with a plan to attack the State’s case, I agreed to meet with the prosecutor to try to resolve the case.
We negotiated a program called Pretrial Intervention (PTI). PTI is a diversion program that works like a contract between the prosecutor and my client. It guarantees that the case will be dismissed if the agreed-upon terms are met.
BC gratefully accepted PTI. He finished the program successfully and his case was dismissed. Because of this, he was able to keep his life and his future on track.
